A great way to stay informed about campus events and opportunities is to subscribe to listservs (sometimes spelled listserves and sometimes called mailing lists). Subscribers to a listserv will receive email messages about the list's topic. Below are some useful CNR listservs and campus listservs, as well as some helpful listserv hints and helpful listserv vocabulary.

CNR listservs:

  • cnr_newsline
"cnr_newsline" is for jobs, scholarships/fellowships, internships, course information, and official university postings that are relevant to CNR. This is a moderated list. Only postings that have to do with those broad categories will be approved.

To subscribe, send email to majordomo@listlink.berkeley.edu. In the body of the message, type "subscribe cnr_newsline" (no quotation marks).

  • cnr_students
"cnr_students" is an unmoderated, restricted, open list. Here, students can post futons for sale, look for roommates, sell old books, organize a group hiking event, or post anything else relevant for students. CNR does not approve the messages here; we just provide the mechanism for the mailing list so CNR students can stay in touch with one another.
Only members of the list can post messages.

To subscribe, send email to majordomo@listlink.berkeley.edu. In the body of the message, type "subscribe cnr_students" (no quotation marks).

It also provides with periodic informational messages about topics in crime prevention such as theft prevention and night safety. The list is "read only" and administered by Campus Safety Programs. Anyone with an interest in campus safety or crime alerts on the Berkeley campus is welcome to subscribe. To subscribe to UC Police news, send a message to majordomo@listlink.berkeley.edu with the following in the body of the message: subscribe ucb_police_news your email address. There should be no other text or signature files, in the body of the message.

Helpful Hints for subscribing to listservs: Return to top

  • It is easiest if, when you are subscribing to a listserv, you send the subscription request from the email account in which you want to receive the messages.

  • If for some reason you wish to have the mailings go to an email address different from the one you are using to send your subscription message, you would add the other email address to the command. For instance, if you're sending a request from your joecalstudent@uclink account, but wish to receive "cnr_newsline" mail at your yahoo account of joecalstudent@yahoo.com, you'd put the line
    subscribe cnr_newsline johndoecalstudent@yahoo.com
in the body of the message. Note: This is not possible with all listservs.

  • To unsubscribe from a majordomo listserv, send email to majordomo@listlink.berkeley.edu with "unsubscribe name of the list" (no quotations) in the body of the message. (Replace, of course, "name of the list" with the actual list name.) For example, to unsubscribe from cnr_students, the message would be "unsubscribe cnr_students."

Helpful listserv vocabulary: Return to top

  • Open: Anyone can subscribe to the list. The list owner does not have to approve subscribers.

  • Closed: The list owner reviews all subscription requests. Only the email addresses that are approved will receive the mailings.

  • Moderated: All messages sent to the list have to be approved by the list owner before they are sent to the subscribers.

  • Unmoderated: The list owner does not review messages before they are posted.

  • Restricted: Only members of the list can post messages.
